Dear Parents and Carers...

Published on 15/07/22

A message from our Head Teacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we come to the end of term, I would like to thank you all for the support with your children over the last year.  It has certainly been a year with ongoing challenges, but equally with lots to celebrate.

This term it has been a delight to see the return of public exams, trips, sports day, activity day, Duke of Edinburgh, Little Shop of Horrors, Y11 and Y13 Proms to name a few.   My colleagues have worked tirelessly to provide a huge range of opportunities for our students in addition to continuing to provide outstanding teaching, learning and support within lessons, and I’d like to publicly thank them for all their many contributions.

Weather Warning for Extreme Heat

Next week we have been issued with a weather warning for extreme heat from Sunday 17th to Tuesday 19th July.  School will remain open on Monday and Tuesday, but we will make the following adjustments to our usual procedures in line with advice from colleagues in public health:

  • Monday is Cultural Awareness Day and so students may wear items of cultural dress or something that expresses them as an individual (see below for further detail).  They may also opt to wear their school uniform if they wish.
  • On Tuesday, students should wear their school uniform that includes a skirt or black school shorts.
  • We will make allowances for students to access water fountains at the start and end of lessons.
  • We will modify PE lessons to avoid strenuous activities in the sun.
  • We will ensure classroom blinds are closed and windows are opened.
  • We will maximise the use of air-conditioned and cooler teaching spaces – although unfortunately these are limited to a small number of rooms.

We strongly advise:

  • Students bring a hat or cap and wear it if they need to go outside.
  • Students bring refillable water bottles to remain hydrated.
  • Students wear sun cream and bring some to school with them to reapply should they need to.

Monday 18th July

Monday is our multi-cultural day so we encourage students to wear items of cultural dress or something that expresses them as an individual.  Of course, this is also an opportunity to wear something cool!  However, please ensure your child is dressed for a professional environment and so no swim wear, short crop tops or very short shorts please. Lessons will take place as normal, but where possible, will celebrate the diversity we have in our community.

Uniform

Please remember to refer to our uniform expectations on the Uniform and Equipment page if you are buying new uniform over the summer holidays.  Please be aware that all trousers and skirts marketed as ‘school wear’ do not necessarily meet the Silverdale expectations; your child should have a good understanding of our uniform policy and be able to guide you in this area as we have placed a large focus on uniform over the last half-term. The over-arching guidance that we have been giving to all students is that all items of uniform should be professional in appearance and suitable for the workplace, so please bear this in mind when purchasing new items of uniform for the next academic year.

We also have a range of high quality second hand uniform for sale at £1 per item from school reception. Please see the Uniform and Equipment page for details. This is a great option from a sustainability perspective and is also a great way to keep the cost of school uniform down. If you have any used items of school uniform that you no longer require, we would be very grateful if you could please bring them to school reception so that they can be reused and added to our second-hand stock.(Reception is open in the school holidays between 8.00 am and 1.00 pm)

Considerate Parking and Anti-Idling

Once again, please can I request that anyone dropping off or picking up in the local area parks considerately. Do not block residents’ driveways and turn off your engine whilst waiting.  Please do consider meeting your child a short walk away from school since this will greatly help to ease congestion on Bents Drive. Suggestions and alternatives can be found here.

Welcome to our New Parent Governor

Earlier this term, we recruited a new parent governor to join Silverdale’s Local Governing Body.  We are delighted to welcome Anna Leonard to the Governing Body, as one of two parent governors. We are looking forward to working with her as we develop the school so that we can continue to provide an outstanding education for our students.  Further details on the Governing Body and how it works are available here
